Description

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated graduate student to join our interdisciplinary team as part of a pioneering project that aims to develop non-DNA-based life forms. The successful candidate will work closely with experts in computational biology, RNA structure prediction, and synthetic biology on the project Towards Non-DNA Based Life: Design and Evolution of Cells Subsisting on Chemically-Altered Ribose Sugars. This project is funded and is hosted by a collaborative team of scientists at the University of Alberta, University of Toronto, and Keele University.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Use proprietary software to model and rank xenoriboses, evaluating their effects on DNA/RNA structure and DNA/RNA-protein interactions.
  • Collaborate with synthetic chemists to ensure all selected xenoriboses are synthetically feasible, removing any that cannot be produced.
  • Liaise with molecular biologists to provide computational insights for lab-based evolution of bacteria subsisting on modified sugars.
  • Contribute to refining algorithms based on experimental feedback throughout the project.

 

Ideal Candidate Profile:

  • Background in computational biology, bioinformatics, computer science, computer engineering or related fields with a strong interest in RNA structure and synthetic biology.
  • Experience with or a willingness to learn molecular modeling techniques (e.g., secondary structure prediction, molecular dynamics simulations).
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, interdisciplinary research environment.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills, with an eagerness to explore new, cutting-edge topics in science.
